The Face of Certain Evil

The Face of Certain Evil
In The Two Towers, Tolkien’s second book in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, there is a fantastic conclusion as well as a cliffhanger of unparalleled proportions. The initial fellowship that set out to take the one ring to Mordor for destruction has been torn asunder. Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee have set out apart from the others as they bear the ring towards Mordor. Yet, the peril that awaits them only continues to grow evermore severe.

As the book concludes Frodo and Sam have been led into the heart of Shelob’s lair. This ancient, evil spider now seeks to feast upon these hobbits and end their quest. Frodo has collapsed on the ground while Sam fought off the treacherous Gollum that led them into this hellish landscape. Now seeing his beloved master and friend collapsed on the ground with the wicked Shelob beginning to wrap him in spider silk, Samwise Gamgee is quickened to action. He takes up Sting, the elvish sword that his master has dropped, along with the phial of Galadriel which burst forth in brilliant light. This master gardener now stands to defend his friend against this foul, ancient creature. In the end Sam deals a critical blow to Shelob and she cowers away.

While Sam’s battle with Shelob is certainly a high point in the book (and I do recommend you read it) it gives us a picture of something greater. Here we find the most unlikely of persons taking a stand against sheer evil. Samwise was a simple gardener back in the Shire. Yet, having been plunged into this quest he is now faced with the most treacherous task to date and has only moments to take action. In other words, his character is tested in a moment. His convictions are brought to bear.

What of us? Certainly none of us will be staring down an ancient evil spider anytime soon. Yet, as we continue to live and follow after Christ we will certainly come face to face with difficult situations. The question is whether we are content to take a stand for Christ or not. Are you truly ready to stand for Christ even if you stand alone? Will you and I stand upon the truth of the Scriptures even if it costs us much? May God give us the grace and strength to stand firm even if we stand alone.

Grace be with you,
C. R. Hamilton
